Melissa Kay Allen, vocalist

jenosullivanInstrument: Vocalist

Year Joined the Band: 2002

Favorite Esquires Tune: It’s amazing how I never tire of hearing these songs!  My favorites to hear are Let’s Dance, I’m Getting Sentimental Over You, Moonlight Serenade, Begin the Beguine…. My favorite songs to sing are I Know Why, Stuff LIke That There, Sentimental Journey, Rock Me To Sleep, Murder He Said….

Musical Influences: My iPod is a mixed bag of melody – Vocally, I’m inspired by songs more than by particular artists (though I am fascinated by Ella and mesmerized by Jane Monheit).  Along with Bobby Darin, Lena Horne, Anita O’Day, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Helen Forrest and Keely Smith I have Michael Buble, Linda Eder, Lisa Stansfield, Natalie Cole, Linda Ronstadt, Mariah Carey, and even The Monkees – LOL.  And, as a child of the 80s, I shall always hold near and dear to my heart the musical stylings of Duran Duran and Tears for Fears!!

Studying / Profession: I am the Director of Catering & Special Events at The historic Ebell of Los Angeles

Hobbies: Singing and dancing!!  In my car, in my shower, on the stage, in the hall, at the copy machine, even in my sleep (I have a lot of dreams about music) – singing and dancing has always been my passion. I enjoy reading and writing when I have time to slow down long enough to do it.  But Tivo is probably my biggest hobby.

A Little Something About You: I met my husband on the dance floor-we met lindy hopping at The Satin Ballroom.  He proposed at the very same location in front of the very same band we had first danced to (the always stellar Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra.)  We discovered The Esquires while searching for a band to play our wedding reception.  I surprised everyone there by singing a song for my new husband – and that brought an invitation to audition for the band.  Been singing with them ever since!!

Best Part of Being an Esquire: I have been very fortunate in my life to have had mentors guiding me along new learning experiences, and that is  exactly what the Esquire Music Foundation is all about.  I have grown so much in my vocal technique and styling in the years I’ve been singing with the band, and I am honored to be a small part of others’ musical paths as well.  It’s a joy and an honor to singing with these musicians, playing this music that is so magical, and I’ll always be grateful to the audiences that dance to it and love it as much as we do.
